We lost our first Tooth!

Emma lost her first tooth 2/3/13. She was very, very excited. The tooth fairy did appear and gave her $5 for her first tooth.

Hemangioma and Hernia Repair : All in One surgery

Mady was born with 3 hemangiomas (vascular birthmarks). Actually, we watched them start forming in the NICU. One on her eye (which gradually went away), one on her shoulder that has ulcerated over the years, and one on her thigh. None are painful, but do have a risk of ulcerating again. We've had many discussions over the last few years with her dermatologist and plastic surgeons and decided this was the year to remove them. In the meantime, Mady was diagnosed with a inguinal hernia which needed to be fixed. In addition to these, she also had extra skin on her belly button from an umbilical hernia she had when she was a baby. We were lucky enough to have two doctors very willing to take her at the same time to do all of this.

Some of you may find these photos unappealing, but I wanted to post these for us to remember, but also for those that are going through similar surgeries. I had a really hard time finding before and after photos on the internet. The doctor did show Mady and I a before and after shot in the office so we had an idea of what to expect. She will definitely need at least one more surgery to decrease the size even more and hopefully get down to just a line scar. The birthmarks were cut out from the middle and purse string sutured, which is why it looks very pulled together and raised in the initial photos. The surgery took about 3.5 hours and we were at the hospital for about 8 hours. Mady had a hard time waking up and was very pale, so they put her back on fluids for a few hours. While fixing the hernia, the doctor took a peek at the other side to make sure she didn't have one on that side as well. All was OK!

Initially she did not want to have these removed. I think she saw them as part of who she is, which is adorable coming from a 5 year old. In the end, she was a perfect patient. She was so brave and only got scared right before surgery. She has listened to us about all her post surgery "rules" and seems happy with her results :)

She had to wear an arm sling for the first week to limit movement and to keep other kiddos at school from getting near it. The risk of these opening back up during the first weeks is very high.

And of course "sissy" was with us the whole day at the hospital
and could not wait to see Mady when she woke up.

Glasses for Madpie

Mady got glasses in December. She is near sighted and will need glasses from here on out! She's so good about it and loves the attention she gets from her purple glasses. She does forget from time to time to wear them and we let it go, as long as she's not in school.

Always on our toes

This is a late post but poor Emma hurt her ankle 3 weeks ago. It swelled up bad. The pediatrician told us it was probably sprained but she kept reinjuring it and eventually landed at urgent care and found out she has a fractured ankle on her growth plate. She has a super cute purple cast and is doing pretty well with it. So well in fact, that we're on week 3 of 4 and she may have to get it redone tomorrow from wearing through it! Sponge baths are the low point for sure. She misses playing with her sister in the tub.

Mady might be lactose intolerant and we're currently on day 4 of a lactose free two weeks to see how she does. She gets tons of gas, bloating and chronic diarrea which no 4.5 year old should have to deal with!

On my end of things, I had an ultrasound last week due to pelvic and back pain and bleeding. Technician said things did NOT look good. That my endo looks like it's adhering everything together in there. I'm suppossed to hear from my doctor today. I'm assuming that means a trip back to the endometriosis surgeon. We'll see!!

That's a super quick update. Hope to post a picture of Emma's super cute cast if I can remember!

My preschoolers

The girls are now doing so much by themselves. They now put toothpaste on their tooth brushes and brush their teeth themselves twice a day. They pick out their outfits and get themselves dressed. They also get into the snack drawer when they shouldn't :)

I think we'll be signing up for Basketball soon, as dance class only lasted a few months before they no longer wanted to go. I think it was because they didn't love the teacher, but I'm really not sure. They are still loving gymnastics and I'm amazed at what they can do.

I'm also still feeling guilty about not blogging as much as I'd like. Emma found one of her half-filled out baby books this weekend and I was so upset, but then I realized early on I did keep a pretty good diary of their lives on this blog. At some point I'll need to print this out for them!

Our weeks now consist of Mon/Tues with Grandma and Pap-Pap, Tuesday nights at the library for story time. Wed/Thursday is preschool, Wed night I have tap. Fridays I am, thankfully, still home with them, and Friday afternoons we have Gymnastics. The weekends are full of errands and fun. This weekend we're taking them to the Natural History Museum.

They had their first sleepover this weekend with their friend Caity, and went well!

See you in the stars

I wish I had the chance to hold your hand, to see you smile, to see you with your sisters. Instead, all I got was a glance at your heartbeat before you were taken away. I will always wonder who you would have been and why you couldn't be. I will forever see you in the stars at night... My angel.

Our angel went to heaven 12/15/12

I finally got up the courage to post about our loss.

Yes, we crazies decided to try for #3! We decided around October after maybe a year of searching for answer about what we wanted to do. We had 3 embryos left from our IVF with the girls in 2008. We decided to try. Christian really didn't have many reservations, I did ;) I was mostly worried about taking something away from my girls. I was afraid I'd be too busy with a baby to be with them. And of course the physical, mental and monetary aspects of doing a Frozen Embryo Cycle, let alone actually being pregnant again. And what if it was a preemie again?

But, we decided it was what we wanted to do. The chances of another preemie are low. The thought of discarding our embryos vs. trying again, was a huge part of our decision making. Something those that have not gone through what we have may not throughly understand. And I saw the girls with my niece and knew they'd think of a new baby as a gift not a burden. At first I was still apprehensive, but as we got into the cycle, it all felt right. We decided to transfer only one, as I'm a very high risk pregnancy with twins.

Everything went great. Christian was unable to be here for the actual transfer which was a little hard on us both, but he had to be away for training. After feeling some symptoms I decided to give in and test and got a negative the first time. 2 days later, it was positive! We were happy, but Christian still was hesitant has he just couldn't believe that it would actually work after 2 failed attempts prior to our girls.

They called us with our beta results, but were told to be cautiously optimistic, as the number was only 27. The nurse told me he usually likes the numbers to be 100+ at that point. So we had to hold onto hop e for 5 days! Second test was 76. This was still not as high as he had hoped and was again told to be cautiously optimistic. And this is why I like to have this blog - to remember all of this because I can not seem to remember what the third number was... I think it was 300. At that point the Dr. was happy and we were scheduled for our first ultrasound at 6.5 weeks. We were excited, but I had been having some pain on my left side and those numbers just had us scared.

We went into the doctor's office and the technician showed us the babies heartbeat. She then told us she needed to show these to the doctor because she was not sure if the baby was where she should be. We were sent out to the lobby with a picture of our bean and told that things were not looking good and that the doctor would be out to talk to us. For about 30 minutes we sat in the lobby. I was crying and holding onto that picture, not looking at it. The doctor came in with 2 nurses, and we just knew it was bad. He showed us a picture of the uterus and where our baby was.... in the upper right part of the uterus. Close to the tube but not in it. A very, very rare ectopic. He immediately sent us to radiology in the hospital for a second look. Again, the technician showed us the heart beat and told us how great it was - which was just heartbreaking for us because no matter how good - it was probably not viable.

She then called the ultrasound doc in who broke the news to us that it was indeed a cornual pregnancy and he was very sorry. We were sent back upstairs to meet with our doctor, who again came in with three nurses.

He told us our options were either to use medication to end the pregnancy or to have surgery. My immediate thought was that I did not want to experience a miscarriage. I wanted surgery. He also wanted surgery, as he was worried about my uterus bursting before the medication had time to work, which could have been fatal.

We were immediately admitted and I had a laproscopic surgery the next morning to remove our angel at 6.5 weeks. When I woke, I found out they removed my left tube as well as the corner of my uterus which was resectioned. It took a good 2+ weeks for me to feel fully recovered physically and even know I feel some adhesions when I'm bloated.

Mentally, I'm all over the place. I was so ready to tell the girls that night of the ultrasound that they were going to have a baby brother or sister. I was so happy not to ever go through another fertility treatment again. And now we still have two embryos left and no baby. I get mad at my body. Why? I mean this is my 4th surgery since 2004 and the chance of this type of pregnancy like 1%.

We're scheduled to talk to Maternal Fetal Medicine in February, which is a step up from a OB/GYN to get their thoughts on another pregnancy. There are thoughts in the medical world that a re-sectioned uterus may mean that you can't carry full term, but thoughts vary on this. If there is any risk at all, we won't even consider it.

And do we want to try again? I don't think either of us really knows. We have Disney in September, so if we did anything it would be after that.

The other part of this that is just so hard is how many people don't understand. And I guess that you can't if you haven't been through infertility, been through the NICU, had twins, and lost a baby. A very common reaction is why do you need another kid - you are blessed with two. Or WHY would you want three kids? And to that I ask  - if you had frozen versions of your children in a test tube somewhere - would you just throw them away and not give them a chance? It's just not a easy as saying okay, we're done. All that being said - we may make that decision to discard. It will be OUR decision and I hope that whatever we decide -we'll find peace with it.

We can write our names!

Both girls can now write their names! Emma was a little behind Mady (by a month or so?) and just made me cry when she wrote her name for me. I hope to upload pictures, but wanted to at least get this in writing before I forgot. Mady is our extra studious girl, Emma is our bundle of energy. They can both spell their last name as well and are always asking how to spell things. We're practicing writing all of our letters, but we are of course best at writing the ones in our name.

Our 4 year appt.

We had our four year doctors appointment today and it was WAY out of the norm - the girls were miserable. I'm going to blame it on their colds and that fact that I didn't lie to them about needing a flu S-H-O-T today. Emma would not do the eye exam and neither of them would put the headphones on for the ear test. These are two girls that have LOVED going to the doctors since they were able. I mean, they were born with nurses standing next to them and spent 50+ days with tubes and wires in them, so they were used to it. They only way Emma would cooperate for her physical exam was by holding my iPhone. So anyway, the stats as I remember them...

Emma
42.25" 97% percentile, 35lbs 50% - ha and her blood pressure was through the roof as she was screaming!

Mady
41" 75%, 39lbs 75%
Eyes were 20/40 and I guess they don't full adjust until age 6

Everything else was good. We're working on getting Mady set up for her plastic surgery surgery on her shoulder and belly. Last night she asked if we could just leave them on. It's hard to explain to her that she'll be happy about it later!

The girls start their first day of tap/ballet tomorrow morning and started up gymnastics again last week. We are off to Myrtle beach tomorrow after dance class. I hope to post about their Willy Wonka/Gymnastics party while we are away OR when we get back!

Okay, so much for posting all the time. Seriously, Facebook and Pinterest will be the death of me!

Thought I'd share this:

Last night I told the girls the fairytale about Mommy and Daddy meeting, falling in love, getting married having them. Mady made me re-tell it 4 times and by the end could basically recite it herself. Too cute!

Also - Miss Mady can now write most of her name... the Y is a little tricky. Emma is getting there!

Coming soon - pictures from our photo shoot!

We can spell! Well, sort of..

Both girls seem to know most of their letters, most of the time. We're still working on numbers. I was amazed to find out that Mady knows most of her colors in spanish as well! I try to throw some spanish in at home, but apparently they are learning it in school as well!

Emma is a little behind her sis with spelling, but that's because Emma would rather be running circles and twirling in her skirt than studying. Who can blame her?

The can each spell out their own name and in addition, Mady can spell Mom, Dad and Ikea. Yes, Ikea :)

That's my quick update! So much for the weekly posts. Next post will be pictures of their new bedroom. I just finished painting a few days ago.

It's time to raise money again for March of Dimes!

http://www.marchforbabies.org/emmaandmady

Every little bit helps. We appreciate anything anyone can donate to this cause that we believe so much in. I am still in shock that our girls were born so early and are doing so well. I'm looking for ideas for fundraising this year, if anyone has any ideas! I was thinking about making and selling chocolate covered pretzel rods for each holiday between now and then... st. patricks day and easter. Last year we had a poker tournament that was a huge success. I've thought about moving it to a firehall or venue but it's a big expense to rent the space.

Anyone that donates now will receive a FREE shipping voucher ($5 off) for any Lil' LJ product @ www.etsy.com/lillj9208.

Sick!

We had our first real bout of illness the last two weeks and thankfully no trips to the ER and no breathing treatments! Mady had a cough and ear infection, which she then passed to Emma, and then me. I was so happy and proud of Mady's lungs for not needing any help!

I'm working on a mural in their room right now and can't wait to post pictures when it's all said and done.

Grandma just picked the girls up for dinner and a sleepover and Christian and I are both fast at work with freelance work. With the $800 spent on two beds and a pretty hefty wish list for the next year, we're working on some extra income :)

New Beds!

The girls got their twin mattresses a few weeks ago and we finally got their beds from IKEA put together yesterday. It literally took a full day! We have them pushed together to basically make a king bed. It takes up quite a bit of their bedroom, but still worked out pretty well. They LOVE them. I will post pictures as soon as I get the closet organized and begin work on their mural. :)

Quote of the week
from Mady: "Mommy, I'm going to work to draw on the 'puter like you" and "Emma, you're my best friend"
from Emma: "Daddy, thank you so much for my beds." (without being asked to say it)

Yay me for posting twice in a week! ;)

No more excuses.

How many times have I probably had this same post title? I started this blog for me, but also for anyone else like me. Maybe you have Endometriosis. Maybe you have twins. Maybe you went/are going through infertility. Maybe you had preemies. But mostly I started this for me. I have a horrible memory. I want to remember as much as possible about these years. The girls are also at an age where they LOVE to look at this blog and look back at the pictures of when they were babies.

Let me just get out my excuses and then I'll move on :)  I work 4 days a week at my "day job". This month I currently have 4 freelance projects going on. I own my own business (Lil' LJ) in which I also do all the design, production and marketing. I have a home that needs tended to. Thank GOD Christian does most of the cooking. Oh yes, and I also have 3 year old twins. I also am a project-aholic. I can't stop assigning myself new things to do. This week I am putting together the girls new big girls twin beds which probably will entail moving rooms and painting. Yes, they'll still sleep in the same room. There is no way they'd go for being separated yet. We're also going to work on Valentine's day gifts for their friends. Did I mention I have no time? Then there is the social world. I can't get enough of Facebook and Pinterest. I have this blog, I have a blog for Lil' LJ that I haven't touched in months and then I have my design blog.

Okay, BREATH.

I am following a decluttering calendar that last all year. Every day there is one mostly minor thing to work on and organize in the house. If I can do that (which I am) than I can certainly promise that I will post once a week with pictures. Even if it's two lines. Thanksgiving flew by. I can't even remember if I posted about it. We drove to Chicago. The drive sucked but we had so much fun and the girls adore their 5 year old twin cousins. I mean adore.

Christmas was awesome. They really "get" everything now. It's just amazing. We made a special key for santa to enter our house, as we have no chimney. They loved every minute of the holiday. Here's a few pictures and I WILL post every Friday. I WILL.

We're officially done with Pull-ups and Diapers

While the girls have been "potty-trained" since August, we have been struggling with pooping. I think "knock on wood" we are finally over that. We just stopped pullups at night about a week ago and have only had a few accidents. The main problem is the girls not wanting to pee before bed. I'm so proud of them!!!
